LIVE Coalition Celebrates Comprehensive Digital Estate Planning

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 17, 2026) — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed Senate Bill SF 3602, the Uniform Electronic Estate Planning Documents Act, into law, marking a significant step forward in modernizing estate planning access and security. The new law authorizes the electronic execution and notarization of non-testamentary estate planning documents and builds on Minnesota’s earlier adoption of electronic wills in 2023.
With this legislation, Minnesota becomes the ninth state to enable end-to-end digital estate planning.
The Legacy, Innovation & Virtual Estate Planning (LIVE) Coalition applauds Governor Walz and state leaders for advancing policies that improve access, affordability, and efficiency for families.
“Minnesota is setting a strong example by advancing smart, technology-driven solutions that expand access to comprehensive, end-to-end estate planning,” said Kristina Howard, Executive Director of the LIVE Coalition. “By allowing fully digital execution of essential documents, this law streamlines the planning process and gives families greater confidence, convenience, and peace of mind as they prepare for the future.”
Under SF 3602, families can now create and execute key estate planning documents, including trusts, powers of attorney, and advance healthcare directives, through secure digital processes. The law will reduce administrative burdens, lower costs, and make it easier for individuals to plan for pivotal life moments. By streamlining these processes, it also expands access to estate planning tools, reduces avoidable court involvement and taxpayer costs, and generates meaningful savings for Minnesota families
LIVE will continue to advocate for forward-thinking estate-planning policy and pave the way for broader nationwide adoption of digital solutions.
