LegacyApp has joined the U.S. LIVE Coalition to help modernize estate planning law for the digital age, bringing a GDPR-native, zero-server approach to data protection.
LegacyApp, a European digital legacy startup founded by co-founders from Poland and the United Kingdom, has become a member of the Washington-based Legacy, Innovation & Virtual Estate Planning (LIVE) Coalition. It joins as one of the few members based outside the United States, connecting a GDPR-native product with the first American group working to bring estate planning law into the digital age.
The LIVE Coalition brings together more than 50 organizations from legaltech, legal services, insurance and technology, including Trust & Will, LegalZoom, MetLife Legal Plans, Empathy, FreeWill and Snapdocs.
Launched in February 2026 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the LIVE Coalition is the first and only U.S. advocacy group dedicated to modernizing estate planning law for the digital age. It runs legislative campaigns in state legislatures to advance electronic wills, digital powers of attorney, remote online notarization and other tools that in most American states still have no legal basis.
The picture is uneven. In most of the country, the digital tools people already use for banking and identity simply have no legal footing when it comes to inheritance.
The current landscape
Progress is starting to show. In 2025 the coalition helped pass new legislation in New York, Missouri and North Dakota. In 2026 bills were signed into law in Minnesota and Utah. Active legislative campaigns are now underway in Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
LegacyApp joins with a distinctly European perspective on user data protection. The app is built on a zero-server-storage architecture: no user data is ever stored on LegacyApp's servers. All personal information stays on the user's own cloud drive, such as Google Drive or iCloud, and trusted persons designated by the account owner gain access only after the owner's death, verified by the app.
The architecture was designed to meet GDPR requirements from day one and to satisfy the security standards of European banks and insurers. That is the perspective LegacyApp is bringing into an American conversation that is only now writing its own rules.
